Marin, who earned a degree in politics and sociology, is a child of Mexican migrants, which he said inspired him to give back to his community by becoming politically involved. Recent UCSC graduate, Hector Marin has also thrown his hat into the ring. The third focus of Shargel’s campaign is the environment, which to Shargel means moving away from automobile infrastructure and expanding bicycle and pedestrian pathways and public transit services. Shargel is a strong supporter of labor unions, specifically the Santa Cruz city workers’ SEIU Local 521, and small businesses. Another pillar of his campaign is labor and the economy. Shargel also supports the increase in the transient occupancy tax, but had no opinion about Measure O, relating to the future of the library. ![]() “It’s not everything, but it’s a great step.” “I’ve been working on that campaign over the past year and I think that it’s a fantastic part of the solution to our housing crisis,” said Shargel. Housing is the primary issue to Shargel, who wants to focus on creating housing solutions “from a working class perspective and for working class people.” To Shargel, that means increasing the inclusionary rates for affordable housing in new developments, bolstering tenant protections, and actively supporting Measure N, the empty home tax. “I was concerned that no one would step up who has the experience, values and the skills to meet the needs of our community.” “While I am not the solution to all of our problems, I want to step up into the role because, when the district maps came out, and the fields were playing out, it looked empty in District 4,” said Shargel. UCSC student, community activist, music teacher and lifelong Santa Cruz resident Bodie Shargel is seeking the seat because he perceives a “leadership vacuum” in the city of Santa Cruz, which he seeks to fill. “I want to speak with them about the issues that most concern them and get to know my district a lot better.” “My hopes are to get out more in the district and meet more residents of District 4,” Newsome said. ![]() He sees the most challenging aspect of the position to be, “getting to work on all the issues.” Newsome said he feels that he has received “strong support,” in his campaign so far, and looks forward to engaging with district constituents moving toward election day. He said that he would let the city voters decide on those issues. Newsome said he had no opinion about the measures on the November ballot such as Measure N, the empty homes tax, Measure O, the fate of the Santa Cruz Library and Measure P, the transient occupancy tax. He also seeks to preserve and bolster city parks and open spaces. Some of the issues that are important to Newsome are economic recovery and growth, creating safe neighborhoods and building more affordable housing. “I want young people in our community to be able to settle down here and build careers and a family,” Newsome said. Newsome, whose expertise lies in American government, political and economic inequality and public policy, was inspired to run for the seat because he “wants to give back to this great community,” and because he wants a brighter future for children in the city. One of the candidates is UC Santa Cruz political science department lecturer, author and father of two, Scott Newsome, who has lived in Santa Cruz for nearly a decade. ![]() District 6, which envelops much of the city’s west side and UC Santa Cruz, is being sought by incumbent Renee Golder and newcomer Sean Maxwell.ĭistrict 4, which contains downtown Santa Cruz, Beach Flats, Municipal Wharf, and portions of the west side has four candidates in the running for the seat, none of which have run for political office in the past.
